Open Results from the Southern Cutting Futurity!

The Open finals are in the books at the 2017 Southern Cutting Futurity in Jackson, MS. This show is one to attend each year if you have not yet. Southern Hospitality and friendly faces keep everyone coming back for more along with the purses and years of tradition!

Classic Open Finals:

The first finals to go was the Classic Open finals, which was topped by two Chartier brothers. Cullen Chartier riding Iridescent Cat (Catty Hawk) marked a 223.5 to narrowly surpass his brother RL’s 223 on Shes Full Of Hope (Smart Mate x Tornados Rey Of Hope) marked just a few horses before. Nothing like a little friendly competition between brothers!

“Richie” is owned by Tom and Hilary Watson and was purchased last year out of RL’s program from breeders Bill and Michelle Cowan who happen to be the owners of RL’s mare “Hope”. This win was truly kept in the family making it a pretty special occurrence for all involved. Cullen received a $15,000 check along with the $1,920.80 Gelding Division Champion’s check. RL and Hope collected a $12,500 check for their Reserve Champion’s check adding to his recent accomplishment of passing the $2million dollar mark in NCHA earnings!

Open Derby Finals:

In the Derby Open Austin Shepard and Sir Long Legs (High Brow Cat x Lil Lena Long Legs) owned by Lew Hall, struck again marking a 224 claim the Championship! Austin and “Spanky” have been quite the team all year long and impressed us at every turn. Just recently they were the NCHA Summer Spectacular Open Derby Champions allowing Austin to claim his last jewel of the Triple Crown series. This is one larger aged events that is actually close to home for Austin and he made the most of it as usual putting together a beautiful run on a testy set of cattle. He is known for making tough situations look easy and to have a great horse on top of it makes it pretty fun to watch! They added another $15,000 to their earnings for the year with this Champion’s check.
