Masterson and Taurel Take the Big Stage

The first of two Amateur finals are in the books at the 2017 NCHA Futurity! We had another set of Co-Champions for the week in the $50,000 Amateur. Robert Masterson riding Little Guy Cat (Cats Merada x Biscalena) and David Taurel riding Playboy Is Smooth (Smooth As A Cat x Mary Has Freckles) both marked a 215 which held up until the end of the tough finals to claim the Championship and the winner’s check amounting to $17,727 for each of the riders!

This win was meaningful for Robert in that his father passed away leaving him a string of show horses and to make him proud was very special. He felt as though he had an angel riding with him which led to an emotional evening for him and his family. “Little Guy” has been one that they have always enjoyed and they are looking forward to continuing on with him and showing throughout the year. The influx of show horses has pushed he and his family to come around the show scene a bit more as of late and leaving their ranch where they raise cattle and horses as their main source of income.

Our other Champion David Taurel, originally from Venezuela, acquired his horse “Pastor” not long before the Futurity. He originally had another horse that he was pretty excited about but ended up selling and just planned on not showing in this year’s Futurity. Josh Townsend originally trained his gelding and called David saying he knew of the perfect horse for him! It turned out that he was very right about the prediction leading to David’s first win in the Will Rogers. Taurel also ended up taking home the Cowboy Trailer Sales horse trailer given to the Champion of this class after they both agreed a coin toss would decide the winner rather than a workoff! His luck showed no signs of stopping that evening.

Third Place in the $50,000 Amateur was Bella Anderson marking a 212.5 on her mare Bobby Jack Cat (Cats Quixote Jack x Shes Too Stylish) claiming a substantial $7,425 check.

The Senior Champion was Rick Thompson riding Metallic Dez (Metallic Cat x Peptos Stylish Sue) and the Champion of the Gelding Division was Jamaican Me Lena Lil (Smart Little Lena x Lil Autumn Splendor) ridden by Hilary Watson.
