Platt Rises to the Occasion to Claim Another Win!

A team that we have become very familiar with over the past couple of years topped the Classic Open Finals at the 2017 Breeders Invitational. Kenny Platt and Moms Stylish Player (Lizzys Gotta Player x Moms Stylish Babe) put together a stellar run marking a 223.5 in the second set of the finals, taking home a $22,857 check for owner Robert Tregemba. Kenny and his special little gelding “Sprout” are always fun to watch and did not disappoint making this their second win for 2017. This win also pushed Sprout’s lifetime earnings to over $275,000!

Kenny was eighth in the second set and was surprised to have several of his favorite cows still left to choose from. The first cow started his run off strong then in true Kenny Platt fashion he worked his second and third cow with little to no mistakes. Being presented with this great situation, Sprout was able to show off his big stops and loads of eye appeal with ease.

Kenny could not express enough how blessed they are to have this horse and they plan to go to the NCHA Derby next then several shows in the fall. He and his wife Becca are expecting their first child in October so he wants to stick a little closer to home as the due date approaches. We would like to congratulate them, as this is such an exciting time and definitely a lot to celebrate for this young couple!

Reserve Champion was Eddie Flynn riding Play Miss Boonsmal (Peptoboonsmal x Play Miss) marking a 222. The pair collected an $18,883 check for owner Danny Jones. This duo has also had a great year thus far and shows no signs of stopping. “Tess” is an electric mare that always wows us with what she can do; she seemed to almost get into the cheering crowd during the finals as well. She is a one of a kind mover and always puts us on the edge of our seats!

Third place was Beau Galyean riding Metallic Rebel (Metallic Cat x Sweet Abra) marking a 220. “Cecil” is always a horse you can bet on to do well and he continued his success at this show before returning to Brazos Valley Stallion Station to finish up his busy breeding season! We are excited to see the first babies of this young stallion.

This finals was also very special for trainer Matt Gaines. He is one of the greatest of all time in the cutting horse industry and his fifth place check in the finals pushed him over the $8 million dollar mark in lifetime earnings. He is the number two all time leading rider in the NCHA, 2016 NCHA Open Futurity Champion, and 2015 NCHA Open World Champion. This accomplishment was that much better for Gaines because he showed Smooth Nu Cat who is sired by Smooth As A Cat and out of Special Nu Baby. All of these horses were trained and shown by Matt throughout their careers and have made legendary marks on the sport of cutting. It is all around one of the greatest stories we have gotten to watch unfold. Congratulations to Matt and his wife Tara for accomplishing this amazing feat.
