Tag Rice wins Novice Finals while Bonnie Martin tops the Seniors

Tag Rice dominated the Open Derby $10K Novice Finals at the 2017 Breeder’s Invitational taking three of the top 4 spots in the finals last night. Tag and One Bat Cat (“Batman”) worked deep in the second set and the four year old Dualin Boon gelding owned by longtime customer Jim Bilbrey put together a 223.5 that was enough to take the win.

Tag told us the run really built after starting with a soft first cow which hasn’t always been the horse’s strong suit but the second cow picked up the pace before cutting a really tough third cow which was more in line with Batman’s style. Tag collected $20,121 for the win here but also picked up some additional checks finishing third on his Brother Scotty’s horse Metallic Alex (Metallic Cat) with a 219 winning $12,669 and fourth on Wats It To Ya also sired by Metallic Cat collecting an additional $9,822 owned by Richard & Beth Carney.

It was a pretty special day for Team Rice as they took home an amazing $42,612.78 in total earnings in the Novice Finals. Tag and Batman will now compete in the Open Wildcard Round to try and claim a spot in the Open Derby Finals.

Reserve Champion was Chris Hanson and This Chics Hot (Spots Hot) after scoring a 222 for owner Ignacio Zubillage and taking home the second place check for $15,516.60. Chris was the first rider to walk to the herd in the twenty one horse finals and held off all the contenders until Tag worked deep in the second set from the 19th hole.

In the Derby Senior Finals it was Bonnie Martin and the very talented homebred Stallion Reysin Kittens (Dual Rey) that came out on top after Bonnie exercised her “do over” option that was offered in this class. After struggling in their first run in the finals Bonnie and "Reysin" came back and put together a flawless run scoring a 224 to take the win. Bonnie wanted to thank all her help and bragged on her trainer Jaime Snider and the team that makes it all happen at Snider Cutting Horses. (The final results and money won had not been posted this time).
