Paula Wood and Suen Too Be Black Claim Derby Non Pro Win!

Paula Wood proved once again that she is one of the best in our industry last night in the Non Pro Derby finals riding her mare Suen Too Be Black (Boon Too Suen x Chitas Blue Boon) marking a 219.5 to claim the Championship! It was a very tough finals with some testy cattle but Paula made it look easy, like she usually does, handling the situation so perfectly. Paula told us she did not feel that way though, that she was a little uptight at first because it was a finals and knew first and foremost that she needed to be smart. There was no doubt that if anyone could handle such a task it would be her but she made sure to give credit to her help John Wold, Casey Green, Lloyd Cox, and her husband Kobie Wood; without this group things like this would not be possible.

Paula’s daughter Marley had just shown in the Limited Non Pro finals the night before on this same special mare newly named “Moo Moo” which Paula explained was kind of a joke at first but just kind of stuck, and ended up fourth collecting a $6,390 check. The Non Pro win added another $18,545 to the mare’s earnings bringing her to a total of $45,268 in lifetime earnings. Paula seemed even more excited for Marley’s success than her own much like many other parents, but was feeling so blessed to have been able to be in the winner’s circle for the evening. She explained that so many times in aged events especially it is more about whose horse is the best for the evening and who has luck in their favor.

The finals are always full of horses and riders that could win it at any time it just has to be your night. You have to take it all in when it is your night! Paula was just excited to be part of the lineup in the finals among some people she has competed with for years and others she watched grow up. It is something to see people raised in the industry then become such a part of it later on, makes for a bright future for the sport that is easy to recognize.

Madalyn Colgrove and Sweet Baby Marie

Reserve Champion was Madalyn Colgrove riding Sweet Baby Marie (High Brow CD x Hangem High Pep) marking a 218 and collecting a $16,765 check. Madalyn was on fire making the Non Pro finals on three different horses! She along with her sister Blakley are tough competitors and always a force to be reckoned with but Madalyn was definitely in the grove at this show.

Third place was Megan Miller riding Olive Martini (Metallic Cat x Martinis Miss Peppy) marking a 217.5 and taking home $14,986. It was a great night for Matt Miller Cutting Horses in both the Non Pro and Open, starting off the evening with both the Reserve Champion and third place coming from his program!
