Lloyd Cox Dominates Cotton Stakes Open Derby Finals

Lloyd Cox came into the 2017 Cotton Stakes Open Derby Finals with his name next to three of the twelve contenders giving him 25% odds for the win! He not only took home the Championship but also claimed the Reserve Championship & split 4th/5th place and the Gelding division.

Lloyd Cox claimed the Open Derby Championship with a 222 on the pretty four-year-old roan stallion Sweat Son (Metallic Cat x Travelin Miss Mosa) owned by Nick Vande Steeg claiming the $10,000 winner’s check, Klapper Spurs and NCHA Champion Trophy. The owner, Vande Steeg, told us he purchased “El Jefe” (Spanish for “The Boss”) as a two-year-old from California trainer & legend, Tom Shelly, who did most of the training and showed him up through the early stages of his four-year-old year.

Due to most of the Major Aged Events being so far from California, the decision was made to bring him a little closer to the action and the reins were handed over to Cox earlier this year. This was Lloyd’s first win on “El Jefe” and they were also a finalist at the West Texas Futurity a few weeks ago.

Lloyd claimed the Reserve Championship aboard Second Spot (Spots Hot x Reycy Moon) with a 221.5 and collecting $8,800 for the owners at Barker Ranch Cutting Horses LLC. “Lilly” was the 2016 NCHA Open Futurity Champion last year with her original trainer Matt Gaines and was also recently moved to Lloyd Cox Cutting Horses. This was just their second show together and it looks like Lloyd’s already got her figured out.

Third place was Michael Cooper riding the beautiful sorrel mare Cattys Hope owned by Rose Valley Ranch. This team had to negotiate a late draw working out of the next to last hole in the finals but “Coop” still managed to find some cows to make a run at the leaders. “Hope” is by Catty Hawk and out of Tornadoes Rey Of Hope and earned a check for $7,500 for their 3rd place finish.

Both teams scored a 219 and collected $1200.50 in this division. They also split 4th & 5th place overall in the Open Derby finals which paid out an additional $5,600.
