Three Way Tie for Open Futurity Title at 2017 Cotton Stakes

Austin Shepard was victorious in the three way work off to decide winner of the Open Futurity Champions Trophy and Awards at 2017 Cotton Stakes

The Open Futurity Finals at the 2017 Cotton Stakes in West Monroe, Louisiana were action packed ending in a three way tie for the win and a work off needed to decide who would take home the Champions Trophy! There were three horses that tied for lead at the conclusion of the finals and it was decided they would all be named “Co or Tri Champions” for the Open Futurity Title and split the prizemoney equally collecting $9,000 each. A work off would decide who would take home the Champion awards.

Most of these young horses have only been shown a handful of times so far and it’s always fun to see the cream rise to the top and in some cases long awaited dreams being realized. Austin Shepard would eventually collect the Champion's awards after working second in the work off and scoring a 220 in the tie breaker aboard La Bets Cash (Bet Hesa Cat x Hollys Holy Cash) owned by Les Ammons. This team collected the Champions trophy along with Klapper Spurs and were also Co Champions of the Gelding division of the Open Futurity.

This team was solid through the go-rounds scoring a 220 in the 1st go and 216 in the 2nd go that gave them the second highest combined score going into the finals.

Ammons told us he lives just down the road from Austin and purchased “Jimmie John” out Austin’s program as a two-year-old. Austin will be switching out horses after this show and heading to Batesville to continue his bid for the NCHA Open World Championship in which he is currently the number one ranked contender on Deluxe Checks.

Dell Bell and A Little Wild Cat (Boon A Little x Wild Cat Girl) owned by Lisa Crossen also scored a 219 in the finals and had the highest combined score coming into the final round with a 219 in the 1st go and 218.5 in the second. They had a little tough luck in the work off working last and didn’t have many cows left to pick from. Along with the $9,000 Co-Champions check in the Open, they also won the Limited Open division collecting an additional $1,029 in earnings.

The third team to tie for the win was Boyd Rice and Seven S Blue Rey (Stylish Rey x One Time Tonight) owned by Mike Gregory. This team scored a consistent 216 & 217.5 in the qualifying rounds and were the first ones to walk to the herd in the work off setting the pace with a 216. They also collected the $9,000 Co Champion's check and an additional $1,680.70 for splitting the win in the gelding class.
