First Go Round Wrap Up From the NCHA Futurity

The 2017 NCHA Futurity Open First Go Round has come to a close and we would like to give a quick rundown of the highlights! There is so much to look forward to in the second go which will be held over the next few days. The talent presented at this show did not disappoint and it looks to only get better throughout the show.

Austin Shepard and Dual Reyish (Hottish x A Little Reylena) topped the round marking a 222.5! The stylish stallion put on a show and the now 7-million-dollar rider set him up for success. Greg Smith was the breeder of “Drake” and was started by his son Kade Smith. Austin guided owner Billy Wolf to Drake’s purchase before the Breeder’s Invitational earlier this year. He has been one that everyone has watched throughout his training and proved to be worth the uproar! His sire, Hottish, has made waves throughout the round as well being a standout freshman stallion. His babies have been anxiously awaited by so many, including owners Dustin and Denna Adams who are thrilled with his offspring’s fantastic showing so far.

There were for teams in the second-place position all with a 222. TJ Good was the first to the lead on the first day of the Futurity riding Metallicious (Metallic Cat x Sweet Shorty Lena) owned by Charles Burger followed by Craig Thompson riding Smokin Some Lena (Dual R Smokn x Crystal Lady Lena) owned by Barnwell Ramsey, and Cullen Chartier riding One Alley Cat (High Brow Cat x Nod N Smile Baby) owned by Jarrett and Shannon Callahan. Wes Ashlock rounded out second place riding Reyzmehot (Hottish x Sigourney Rey) owned by John and Jana Thancker, adding to the success of the Hottish babies thus far. Wes is also leading the Limited Open Division with John Sanislow riding Im Quintan Checks (Im Countin Checks x Quintan Blue) owned by Circle Y Ranch following closely behind with a 221. John is also leading the Gelding Division riding this same horse. Ty Brown holds the second-place position in the Gelding Division riding CR Smart Boots (Boon Too Suen x CR Smart Lil Kitty) owned by Sarco Creek Ranch marking a 220.5!

Ascencion Banuelos holds the top spot in the Open Senior Division riding Catillac Reys (Metallic Cat x Tootsie Rey) owned by Michelle Cannon with a 219.5 while Ronnie Rice is in second with a 218.5 riding Docs Fanci Cabernet (Woody Be Tuff x Fancy Frostina) owned by Gary Goodfried.

There are ten duos above a 220 and thirty-nine with a 218 or better. These are followed by many other strong horses and riders with the bubble score of 213.5 or better. With so many excellent horses and riders anything can happen! The end of the first go also marks the end of some horse’s first show. There are always teams that have bad luck unfortunately and some of the very best do not advance. It is important to remember that this is their first show and not their last. Yes, this show is the pinnacle of achievements in this industry but so many horses go on to have extraordinary careers despite a rough start at the Futurity.

We are excited to see what the rest of this show has in store but also, we cannot wait to see what 2018 has in store for the sport! Stay up to date and follow your favorite horses on CHC’s live scoring and good luck to everyone!
