Vote for Pedro! NCHA Limited Open Futurity Champion
Author: Lauren Middleton
The Limited Open Finals starts off the exciting lineup of finals each year at the NCHA Futurity! It is also a pretty special one to watch as it is a major accomplishment for these up and coming trainers in our industry. The first Champion for the 2017 NCHA Futurity was Pedro Ornelas riding Little Jo Cat (High Brow Cat x Jo Jo Boon) owned by Anderson Cattle Company. The duo marked a stellar 225 deep in the second set to take home the $18,626 Champion’s check.

This win marks Pedro’s first Championship in the “Big Pen,” and we are sure there will be many more to follow. The stylish gelding “Little Jo” also looks to have a promising career as he is in both the Open Semi Finals with Pedro and the Non-Pro Semi Finals with owner, Steve Anderson. When talking to the whole team, they spoke very highly of this special gelding. They knew there was something extraordinary there from the start, and this win had a little nostalgia to it as well because his mother Jo Jo Boon was Champion of the Limited Open her year at the NCHA Futurity! It is always even more sweet to be successful on a “homegrown” horse which is an aspect the Anderson’s get to enjoy with Little Jo. Pedro became part of the Anderson’s team earlier this year, and between his addition to the program and the quality horses that cutters have become accustom to seeing from this barn there is an exciting future ahead!

Reserve Champion of the Limited Open was Nate Lansford riding Cat About Houston (Metallic Cat x Bet On Houston) for owners, Rose Valley Ranch. They marked a 221 second out in the finals to hold the second-place spot to the end and claim the Reserve Champion’s check amounting to $16,223. Nate is no stranger to the spotlight each year at the NCHA Futurity. In 2016, he was a finalist in both the Limited Open and the Open aboard another horse owned by Rose Valley Ranch. His showmanship shines each year, and it shows in his mounting success.

Third place was Ty Brown riding CR Smart Boots (Boon Too Suen x CR Smart Little Kitty) marking a 217.5. Ty started off this year’s Futurity with a bang being one of the first go-round leaders, and he and his talented mare owned by Sarco Creek Ranch are continuing to stand out in the crowd. They collected a $13,820 check for their third-place finish.

With the first finals of the 2017 NCHA Futurity in the books, the anticipation builds for more finals to come. It is hard to believe that these talented horses have only been shown a handful of times and can handle stepping up to mark big scores and claim championships. These babies never cease to amaze us from year to year making us crave the sport even more. We look forward to watching and we want to congratulate all of the winners and the finalist in the Limited Open and wish them good luck in the Open Semi Finals!
