Amateurs Putting Up Big Numbers in Abilene

The 2018 Abilene Spectacular continued this weekend with all the Amateur contenders taking their turn in the herd and put up some big numbers thanks to some good cattle to work with. Here's a full wrap up of which riders took home all the money in each division.

4YO Amateur: 

The first finals to go were the 4YO Amateurs which saw a total of seven horses competing for Champions checks in three divisions. Vicki Williamson from Argyle, TX eventually came out on top scoring a 217 aboard Metallic Princess (Metallic Cat x Miss Dualin Colonel) taking home the championship as well as the Senior Title. Viki and “Princess” collected the Champions check for $3,000 along with a check for the Senior division win worth an extra $1,790.47


Reserve Champion was Christina Huntley from Houston, TX riding Dibz (Woody Be Tuff x DPS Lenas Lucinda) scoring a 212 and collecting a $2,500 check.

Champion of the gelding division was Jim McCain from Graham, TX riding River Ridge Cat (Cats Merada x Smart Little Snap) owned by Jim & Denise McCain scoring a 206 in the finals and collecting a $1,500 check for their 4th place finish in the finals along with an additional $1,790.47 for the Gelding win.

5/6YO Amateur: 

The 5/6YO Amateurs were the next to go and it was Christina Huntley from Houston, TX who one upped here previous results by this time securing the win with a 221 aboard HR Cats Starlight (High Brow Cat x Nurse Grey) owned by EJ Huntley. She collected the $4,000 Champions check in this division as well as an extra $1,909.84 for winning the Gelding division. It was a great day for Christina who collected just over $8,410 in total earnings here in the Amateur rounds!!


Reserve Champion was Red Hot Metal (Metallic Cat x Spots Hot Shot) ridden by Michael Armstrong from Marietta, OK scoring a 215 in the finals and winning $2,500. This team were also the Senior champs collecting an additional $2,387.29

4YO Unlimited Amateur:

Mike Kemna from Valley View, TX and DBL Smart (Dual Smart Rey x This Cats Smilen) were the first team to work and wasted no time posting a 220 on the score board which was good enough for the win collecting the $3,000 Champions check.


Rick Thompson from Bryan. TX was the Reserve champion aboard Metallic Dez (Metallic Cat x Peptos Stylish Sue) scoring a 218 collecting the $2,250 check.


Mike Schraeder from Tomball, TX won the other two divisions in this class aboard Sonic Smooth (Smooth As A Cat x Desires Rey) collecting $1,790.47 for the Senior and $1,432.38 in the Gelding divisions to go with their $1,500 5th place check from the finals.

5/6YO Unlimited Amateur:

The last Amateur finals of the day saw Bridey Greeson from Victoria, TX take out the top honors aboard TC Heiress (Third Cutting x Peptos Stylish Sue) owned by Sarco Creek Ranch scoring a 220 for the win and collecting the $4,500 winner’s check.


Reserve Champion was young Langston Patillo from St Elmo, IL scoring a 219 on High Stylin CD (High Brow CD) owned by his father Blake Pattillo collecting the $3,500 check for second.


The Gelding champion was Superey (Dual Rey x Highbrow Supercat) ridden by Von Sutton scoring a 215.5 collecting the $1,862.09 winner’s check to go with the $1,656.86 they collected in the finals with their 5th place finish.


Local Abilene, TX cowboy/doctor Rick Rothwell was the last rider of the day and made it worth the wait taking home the Senior championship aboard Metallic Baby Doll (Metallic Cat) owned by he and his wife Pricilla taking home the $2,387.29 winner’s check to go along with the $1,500 finals check for their 6th place finish.
