Big Payday for Thompson & Cox at The Ike Derby Classic
Author: Lauren Middleton
The Classic Open was first to go at the Ike Derby and Classic getting us excited for all of the Champions to be crowned throughout the week! Once you get to this stage in the game, the 5/6 year olds, the winner can be just about anyone that competes. They are all so amazing at this level. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and rooting for everyone.
This time it was Craig Thompson and Reyzurbetsonthiscat (Bet Hesa Cat x Ariel Rey), owned by Barnwell Ramsey, took home another win this morning marking a 223 first out in the Classic Open! These two were the Champions of the Derby Open last year and returned ready to add the $19,626.03 check to their record!
“Ray” was also the Gelding Champion adding another $2,038.40 to their earnings. Craig always makes it look easy and Ray adds to it in a seemingly effortless picture with his athleticism and cow smarts. They are a fun team to watch and they are coming for 2018 strong!
Craig also had a second horse in the finals, Bet Sheza Marka (Bet Hesa Cat) also owned by Ramsey and ended up winning the Novice Division with a 215 receiving a $1,881.60 check for the Novice win to go with their 9th place finals check for $2,000 giving Thompson total earning today of right at $25,546.03
Reserve Champion was Matt Miller riding Metallic Mistress (Metallic Cat x Smart Crackin Chic), owned by Holy Cow Performance Horses, marking a 219. Matt and “Giselle” collected a $16,697.78 check along with their title.
Matt was also third place aboard Amandas CD (High Brow CD x Amandas Stargun), owned by Chris and Tracy Brengard adding another $13,769.52 to his great mare's career earnings!
Open Derby Finals:
Lloyd Cox had a day to remember making it back on seven horses between the Classic Open and Derby Open finals! He put together several nearly flawless runs thoughout the day and collected eleven checks amounting to an incredible $89,647.40! This kind of thing is nothing new for one of the top Open riders in the industry but it is still extremely impressive knowing alll of the variables involved. In the Derby Open Lloyd rode Blackish (Hottish x SS Blacks Lil Kitty), owned by Julie Jarma, to a challenging 225! They collected over $21,000 with their hair-raising run. He and "Beyonce" were also the Novice Division Champions.
This was the beautiful mare's first show due to an injury during the NCHA Futurity. She has been highly anticipated by so many who have heard of her talent and we are sure Lloyd has been anxious to show her! It was certainly worth the wait as she look like she had not missed a beat. The story behind the ones we raise get us dreaming about what they will be like. Julie got her wish as an owner with this win. Beyonce is one we will love to watch all year!

Reserve Champion was Beau Galyean scoring 222.5 on Rollz Royce (Dual Smart Rey x Show Biz Kitty) owned by Thomas Guinn. An interesting side note is that Rollz Royce's dam, Show Biz Kitty, is the dam of SS Black's Lil Kitty and grand dam of Blackish. This duo had some tough luck at the NCHA Futurity but were able to show off their skills today earning the $18,100 check for their second place finish.
There was a three way tie for third place all scoring 219's including:
