Non Pro Limited Derby Champion
After falling just short of NRCHA premier event wins over the past year, Garrell Williams and Sparks On The Fence (Smart Boons x Spark Chic Olena x Smart Chic Olena), took home the title of 2018 NRCHA Derby Non Pro Limited Champions.
The pair managed to stay in the top five through all three events, winning the herd work with a 213.5, marking a 212.5 in rein work and sealing the deal with a 218.5 in the cow work. With an overall composite of 644, Williams took back a plethora of prizes to Scottsdale, Arizona, including a Gist custom buckle, a DM Tack headstall, a Platinum Performance gift certificate, a straw hat from Shorty's Caboy Hattery and winnings totaling more than $2,600.
When Williams purchased the 2012 mare from fellow non pro competitor Clark Weaver, last July, she transitioned into a new barn. "Carlee" was in training with NRCHA Professional Brad Barkemeyer, at the time of purchase. Williams' decision to join the new training program has been nothing but a positive experience. " It's about horsemanship. They put the horse first and the rider first. It's a great program," she said.
Next on the list of achievements for this team is qualifying for the NRCHA Celebration of Champions in the Non Pro Two Rein. On Sunday, June 10th at the Paso Robles Event Center, Williams and Sparks On The Fence finished second in the Non Pro Two Rein Spectacular, sending them over the $750 earnings mark and making them no longer eligible to compete in the boxing divisions. Williams feels comfortable and confident in their journey of going down the fence, because the mare gives 100% all of the time. "She walks in the show pen and she is all business," Williams stated.
Teary-eyed, Williams was quick to express her favorite part about the mare. "She loves me back and I love that about her. Being in her stall with her. Being a on a trail ride with her. I just love being with her."
Williams thanked her husband Preston, trainer and friends Brad and Mindy Barkemeyer and everyone who has supported her along this journey.
