Another Great Southern Futurity in the Books

Author: Lauren MiddletonThe 2018 Southern Cutting Futurity is one of the last events to wrap up the show season for so many cutters each year. This time around in Jackson, MS was full of great memories for our following Champions!

Futurity Non Pro

Nadine Payne came back to leave as the Futurity Non Pro Champion once again this time aboard Desires A Gun (Boon Too Suen x Desires To Play) with a 429 cumulative score. This little mare was already the Futurity Open Reserve Champion earlier in the week with Nadine’s husband James and has had an exceptional fall, this being her second Championship for the season! This win added another $6,500 to their earnings.

Derby Non Pro

In the Derby Non-Pro Ashley Flynn Continued her winning ways aboard her great gelding Smooth Lines (Smooth As A Cat X Okie Skyline) marking a 222! These two click so well and have been consistent throughout the year. It is fun to watch Ashley show because she knows her horses in and out, which is evident especially when the situations might not be ideal. They look confident at all times and everyone knows the cutting is never over until she walks to the herd. Year to year we always expect her to have a talented horse to show but this one stands out. They are sure to have an exceptional career together. This win along with the Gelding Division Championship brought his earnings to over $83,000!

Classic Non Pro

Bill Cowan and Shes Full Of Hope (Smart Mate x Tornados Rey Of Hope) marked a 220 to top the Classic Non Pro collecting a $10,000 check for the win! “Hope” has been an asset to the Cowan family from the start having an excellent career with earnings nearing $170,000! She has had a great deal of success in both the Open and Non-Pro along with being ridden by both Bill and his wife Michelle in the Non-Pro. Michelle will tell you Hope is definitely her mare, but it is cool to see that she is great for any of them to go show! She is an honest mare that is always trying to please! Even after her show career she will be a special one to have in their breeding program and as a cross to their stallion Catty Hawk (High Brow Cat x Scarlet Dance), who is making waves of his own!

Derby Unlimited Amateur

The Amateur classes rounded out the show as they often do, starting with the Derby Unlimited Amateur. Marvin Marmande and Entirely Smokin (Dual R Smokin x Entirely Magic) came away with the win marking a 217. They received a $4,300 check for the win along with the $940.80 Senior Champion’s check and the $1,920.80 Gelding Division Champion’s check! It was an awesome day for this duo and as Marvin has said before it brings him such joy to do well on the horse’s that he raises. This gelding is a third generation of horses that have come out of his breeding program. It gives him an added sense of satisfaction to succeed on horses that he has been a part of from the very beginning!

They took home $2,500 for the win as well as $1,058.40 for the Senior Division win, and $1,646.40 for the Gelding Division win! These two came into this show as defending Champions as they left this show last year with a Championship! They seem to really like Jackson, MS. In saying that though, they have made many finals being another very consistent team in the show pen right now. Lica is also very involved in the NCHA promoting the Amateur Divisions and a true lover of the sport!
