Hashtags & Cool N Hot Neck and Neck in NCHA Open Horse of Year Race

There is always a lot of anticipation around the NCHA Horse of the Year Standings, and this year the Open points are once again coming down to the wire. Before the Southern Cutting Futurity, just 20 points separated Cool N Hot (Hottish x Donas Cool Cat), with 600 points, and Hashtags (Metallic Cat x Dual Rey Tag), with 580 points tallied up so far!

Cool N Hot, owned by Paula and Kobie Wood, is heading the race with 600 points

The Southern Cutting Futurity, which started just a few days ago, is a critical event for the two stallions. Hashtags, shown by Tatum Rice, marked a leading 220 in the first go of the 5/6-Year-Old Open and will be shooting for a win which will be worth a total of 20 points from that division and would put the horses in a tie going into the Open 4-Year-Old finals tomorrow, where Cool N Hot will be shown with Sean Flynn in the saddle.

Cool N Hot, was shown this season by both Kobie Wood and Sean Flynn, because Kobie had to unexpectedly undergo heart surgery. The stallion marked a 219 in the first go of the 4-Year-Old Open, and they could win up to 40 points, given the higher entry numbers.

The Southern Cutting Futurity is the last event Cool N Hot could accumulate any more points for the race, but Hashtags could still garner up to 20 points during the NCHA World Finals if he came out on top.
Finishing in the top 15 in the World Finals will give Hashtags at least 4 bonus points and possibly the maximum 20 if he becomes the Show Champion.

Based on Hashtags’ opportunity to collect more points at the NCHA World Finals, Cool N Hot would have to have a top-4 finish in the 4-Year-Old Open at the Southern to unofficially secure the title. But if the sorrel stallion ends up below that line, Hashtags has a shot of surpassing him at the NCHA World Finals.

Both stallions are undoubtedly athletic, unique, talented and deserving of the title. Cool N Hot has impressed everyone this year with big wins like the NCHA Super Stakes Derby Open Championship with Kobie. Hashtags has been nothing but strong and consistent with sole rider Tatum Rice throughout his Derby year and this year, and he definitely turns heads when he walks to the herd.

Good luck to both talented teams! We are both anxious and excited to see how the race pans out!
